Dr Dimitrios Taskos is a Researcher at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources, HAO (Thessaloniki, Greece). He holds a PhD in Viticulture and an MSc in Oenology-Viticulture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is an experienced agronomist-oenologist with a unique background that combines field research, viticulture, winemaking, and grape-wine industry operations. Prior to joining HAO-DIMITRA, he spent more than two decades in the Greek wine industry, serving as Winery Manager, Head of Viticulture, and R&D Director at Boutari S.A.. His research activities include the coordination of major research and innovation projects such as Innovine, Hellenoinos, and the national grapevine breeding programme on newly developed grapevine varieties. Across its body of work, the central theme is grapevine performance under heterogeneous and stressful vineyard conditions, with a sustained interest in translating plant responses into practical tools for precision and sustainable viticulture. This includes proximal sensing for biomass, nitrogen status, yield, and grape quality prediction, stable-isotope approaches to understand how water and nitrogen shape vine function and spatial growth patterns, and a newer expansion toward abiotic-stress resilience through beneficial microbiomes. The work also extends into grapevine genetic resources and diversity, and germplasm-collection studies spanning wild grapevines, native cultivars, and underrepresented Mediterranean landraces. A strong future direction is to integrate these strands by combining sensing, isotopic, microbial, and genetic datasets into vineyard-scale decision systems for management zones, stress diagnostics, and cultivar selection under climate change.
