Agricultural Research Programme for the Development of New Varieties of Plant Species
The objective is the development of new varieties with enhanced productivity, high quality of final products, and resilience to both harmful organisms and abiotic stress factors, such as drought, saline soils and extreme temperatures.
The main deliverable was the production of «breeder’s material» and the submission of applications for the registration of new varieties in the National Catalogue of Varieties of Cultivated Plant Species.
Seven proposals, covering seven different plant species —wheat, barley, walnut, sweet cherry, apple, tomato and oregano — were implemented at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources.
Researchers of the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources evaluated the new varieties through multi-location trials conducted under diverse soil and climatic conditions across the country, with particular emphasis on the challenges posed by climate change. At the same time, they strengthened the link between scientific research and market needs through the development of high added-value plant propagation material.
