Dr. Ioannis Manthos serves as a Principal Researcher in the field of Nut Pomology at the Department of Nut Trees, Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources, Hellenic Agricultural Organization – ELGO-DIMITRA. He also collaborates closely with the Department of Deciduous Fruit Trees, Naoussa, of the same Institute. Dr. Manthos conducted postdoctoral research under the AgroETAK Project, focusing on the evaluation and genetic identification of plant genetic resources of indigenous populations of the European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.).
He has served as the Principal Investigator or as a member of the research team in more than seventeen (17) national and international competitive research projects. He has authored more than twenty-eight (28) peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized scientific journals.
His research focuses on the cultivation of nut tree species, including walnut, pistachio, chestnut, almond, and hazelnut. More specifically:
- Fruit tree cultivation, with emphasis on nut tree species.
- Innovative cultivation techniques for nut trees.
- Evaluation and characterization of native populations of nut tree species.
- Evaluation and characterization of new cultivars of nut tree species.
- Novel harvesting technologies and postharvest management of nuts.
- Genetic improvement (breeding) of nut tree species.
- Adaptation strategies for nut tree species under climate change.
