Dr Paschalina Chatzopoulou holds a degree in Pharmacy, and a PhD from the Department of Pharmacy at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, specialising in the technology of aromatic medicinal plants and the analysis of bioactive compounds.
She received training in ‘green’ technologies for obtaining extracts from natural products at the Centre for Bio-Pharmaceutical Science, Gorlaeus Laboratoria, University of Leiden and at the Department of Applied Technological Chemistry, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.
She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Pharmacy at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1992–1994) and subsequently at the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk S.A. as Clinical research Associate. She joined NAGREF as researcher in 1997, and currently is Research Director at ELGO-DEMETRA IPGRB. Her research work focuses on the evaluation, conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources of aromatic and medicinal plants, the development of conventional and innovative ‘green’ technologies for the isolation of bioactive compounds, as well as their chemical analysis and characterization. She has significant experience in participating in, and coordinating European, national and privately funded research projects. Her research work includes original publications in international scientific journals (h-index > 30), numerous presentations at national and international conferences, and the authorship of a scientific book.
She participates in national and international scientific committees and networks relating to aromatic and medicinal plants. She is a member of the EFET Working Group of the Codex Alimentarius ‘Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs’, as well as the Working Group of the European Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR – Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Working Group).
