IPGRB - Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources

The Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources (IPBGR) is part of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA), under the General Directorate of Agricultural Research – (agres.elgo.gr/el/node).

ELGO-DIMITRA with its 11 research institutes supports Greek agriculture to face the challenges arising from global changes. It brings together the largest concentration of applied agricultural research activity in Greece, focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation, the conservation of genetic resources, the restoration of biodiversity, the production of healthy food, and the competitiveness of agricultural enterprises. Through these efforts, ELGO-DIMITRA contributes to the development of sustainable agricultural systems while strengthening the resilience of agricultural production and the environment.

The Institute is headquartered in Thermi, Thessaloniki, at the ELGO-DIMITRA agricultural research Campus. The IPBGR also includes the Department of Deciduous Fruit Trees in Naousa, the Department of Nut Trees in Vardates, Lamia, and the Laboratory for the Analysis of Cigarettes and Tobacco Products in Drama.

Our main research objectives are:

The conservation, evaluation and utilization of plant genetic resources. The development of new plant varieties with improved yield, quality and adaptability. The development of sustainable production systems. Enhancing the sustainability of agriculture through the use of renewable energy sources and precision agriculture. The development of innovative and integrated plant protection methods. The characterization and assessment of the quality of plant-based agricultural products.

Our research is conducted in experimental fields, state-of-the-art greenhouses, and modern laboratories equipped for instrumental analysis, biotechnology and genomics.
