Dr. Dimitrios Katsantonis is a researcher at the Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DΙMΙTRΑ, Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources. His research focuses on agronomy, agri-nutritional technologies, plant pathology, with a particular emphasis on sustainable agricultural practices, precision agriculture, and cereal crop improvement, particularly rice, agroecology and pollution.
Dr. Katsantonis awarded his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of Reading, UK, in 2000, on the mechanisms of nematode-induced susceptibility to Fusarium and Verticillium wilt of cotton.
Since 2011, Dr. Katsantonis has led numerous research projects, including EU-funded initiatives such as DEMETER, AGROCYCLE, RUMORE, RICEGUARD, and ERMES, SMARTPADDY, addressing challenges in sustainable farming, disease management, and circular economy practices. His work integrates innovative technologies such as IoT, blockchain, and aerial imagery to optimize agricultural processes and enhance food security.
Dr. Katsantonis's research interests extend to food safety, functional foods, bioeconomy, and the valorization of agricultural by-products. His commitment to bridging scientific innovation with practical applications makes him a key contributor to the advancement of modern agricultural science.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. His Scopus-indexed works include 37 papers with 1,021 citations and an h-index of 20. He has also supervised several Ph.D. and postdoctoral researchers, fostering the next generation of scientists in agricultural research.
