Floriculture
The Laboratory of Floriculture focuses on research in the fields of growth and flowering of floricultural plants, propagation and production of elite plant material using modern techniques, the discovery of new floricultural crops from native endemic and/or autochthonous plant species, as well as their genetic characterization using molecular DNA markers, aiming to connect and transfer technology between research and practical, on-farm application in the horticultural sector.
- Botanical expeditions to discover new floricultural species from Greek flora.
- Ex situ conservation, acclimatization and evaluation of new genotypes of Greek species for their sustainable use of New Flower Crops.
- Mass propagation of elite plant material using in vivo and in vitro techniques.
- Cultivation in the field/greenhouse/pots with experimentation in plant physiology, nutrition and post-harvest.
- Applications of floriculture in garden design and urban landscape architecture.
- Genetic characterization of floricultural species and DNA sequence documentation in GenBank (development of new species-specific molecular markers, DNA sequence analysis and comparative genomics).
