Genetics and Breeding in Cereal

Cereal breeding focuses on the development of new high-yielding varieties of excellent quality, with resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, adapted to the conditions of climate change. Through the classical cereal breeding program, more than 100 new cereal cultivars have been released and registered in the National Variety Catalogue of Cultivated Plants (NVC) over the last 40 years. Today, there are 34 cereal cultivars owned by ELGO-DIMITRA registered in the NVC (6 durum wheat, 10 bread wheat, 9 barley, 4 oats, 3 triticale, 2 rice). The research focus on cereals: Durum Wheat, Bread Wheat, Barley, Oats, Triticale, Rye, Maize, Rice, Sorghum, Ancient Wheats (Einkorn, Emmer, Spelta, etc.) and Cereal Wild Relatives.
