Molecular Breeding and Plant Genomics

Plant Genomics and Molecular Breeding

We focus on applying molecular methods and tools for plant breeding of crops of significant economic value for Greece. Our work expands from exploration of plant genomes (genomics) to the analysis of the effect of epigenetic mechanisms and small RNAs on gene expression. More specifically, we are working on:

  • Crop phenotyping (Phenomics)
  • Plant genotyping (Genomics)
  • Molecular markers and epigenetic markers for the characterization of genetic diversity inside populations
  • Molecular characterization of plant genetic resources
  • Development of molecular markers using diverse -omics technologies
  • Mapping of quantitative traits and gene identification
  • Marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genome-wide association studies (GWAS)
  • Comparative transcriptomic analyses of plant cultivars (Transcriptomics)
  • Genetic engineering and genome editing
  • Scion-rootstock molecular interactions in grafted vegetables
  • Metagenomics and plant breeding

We have recently secured funding for expanding our plant genomics lab. Details on our lab’s Research Gate page:
